Kula Shaker, O2 Bournemouth, 30th April 2024

Like a Timewarp or some mystical portal, straight back to 1996.

Kula Shaker played the O2 Academy in Boscombe, Bournemouth Wednesday night in a support slot and delivered a 50 minute set of joy and nostalgia, in that order.

Crispian Mills does not seem to have aged and still plays with the same energy I remember back in 1996 when I first heard the album K. I remember that well as I arrived back at University, went into my student flat and my flatmate said “you heard this yet” and played ‘Tattva’. I was an instant fan and bought the album pretty soon after that.

Setlist

  • 303
  • Grateful When You’re Dead / Jerry Was There
  • Idon’twannapaymytaxes
  • Broke as Folk
  • Shower Your Love
  • Charge of the Light Brigade
  • Tattva
  • Hey Dude
  • Hush
  • Govinda

They imminent arrival on stage was signalled by the lighting of josticks next to the drum kit, the aroma drifting across the audience. The band appeared to a raucous applause and they were on it.

Crispian dressed in a black sparkly shirt with black and red striped trousers wielding his guitar effortlessly, it’s a cliche but as an extension of himself. His voice certainly shows no sign of letting up. The playlist above speaks for itself in the quality of the gig accompanied by his band who were masters of their own craft but the spotlight definitely on the front man, the 29 years since that first listen not relevant at all.

The lighting guys get some kudos here and the backdrop throughout showing a projection of a psychedelic oil and colour mixed live on the night, no two gigs would have the same.

It was nostalgic for some for others and everyone there it was a great band showing how good live music can be, we were spoilt, and that was the support for the night.
