Campaign to secure the future of the iconic music venue, The Joiners

This needs support, local and from industry.

A social post / link from one of the local papers appeared on my feed tonight titled as above ‘Campaign to secure future of iconic music venue The Joiners’. This filled me with dread as it’s a venue I have frequented for more years than I’d like to mention, and still do regularly.

So many great bands big and small have graced my ears, I’ve done shots at the bar with bands, I’ve been there solo and many times with friends and helped catch an inordinate number of stage divers. And now its future is in jeopardy.

To quote the article “The Joiners has helped launch the careers of bands including Oasis, Coldplay, Green Day and the Manic Street Preachers during its illustrious 60 year history”. The Libertines and many more

That list of names show how important these small venues are, I even drank at The Joiners and then went on drinking with an actual Foo Fighter thanks to this place. It’s a place of many memories for many people. You can do your bit to save it.

It is among seven grassroots venues community benefit society Music Venue Properties (MVP) is hoping to put into community ownership via its Own Our venues fundraising project.

The new project aims to remove grassroots venues, including Esquires in Bedford, The Sugarmill in Stoke-on-Trent, The Croft in Bristol, Peggy’s Skylight in Nottingham, The Lubber Fiend in Newcastle and The Pipeline in Brighton as well as The Joiners, from vulnerable commercial leases and place them in community ownership.

“It follows the success of a first campaign, in 2023, which raised £2.88 million and secured the future of five other venues.”

MVP is once again calling on music lovers to support the initiative, which runs from today until July 31.
