Overpass – Now that’s how you do an instore!

Overpass played Vinilo on a very sunny afternoon in Southampton and I’ll sum it up in a single sentence which I said to them, “Now that’s how you do an instore!”

A ten song set, the entire new album ‘Elsewhere, Always’ performed by the full band feels almost greedy for an instore but everyone in attendance I’m sure was more than happy to be witness to it. The amount of kit they unloaded and more than one guitar for guitarist Elliot should have been a clue we were in for a treat.

The internet will tell you that Overpass are a fast-rising, four-piece indie-rock band from Birmingham, England, known for their anthemic sound, soaring guitar solos, and high-energy live shows. I’ve witnessed the high energy before and will again later this year. This was stripped back but still as good.

The band is made up of Max Newbold on lead vocals and guitar, Elliot Rawlings was on lead guitar, India Armstrong on bass and Jake Bishop on drums. Four very talented musicians who don’t just go for the obvious in your face or jangly guitar sound a lot of up and coming indie bands do. The lyrics and the music touch deeper than that.

They can catch your ear with melody then with the next track grab you with emotion, it all sounds like them but there’s not a consistent repetitive sound, in a good way. Elliot on lead conjures beautiful sounds out of his guitar on tracks like Fall in Love and Indie make the bass look effortless with her gentle approach which does not reflect in the sound coming out, how! Jake even without a full set kept the beat perfectly and Max, you get the impression if he was singing to one person or a packed venue he brings he A game, great vocals and rhythm guitar throughout. just a great band full stop! I did like that the few times they introduced more than just the song title, Max turned and raised his eyes at Indie as a queue to take over with a few words about the upcoming song.

They are releasing their ‘highly anticipated’ debut studio album, Elsewhere, Always, on 5 June 2026 and you’d be a fool to pass it up. Looking forward to the vinyl arriving.

This reads like a fan because I am one, I like the band before this instore before I saw them live last year and this just builds on that, plus it was a pleasure to meet them after as well. It was a signing so expected but they were up for conversation so the icing on the cake.

As always great organsation by Vinilo Recird Store, Looking forward to getting the album June 5th and looking toward to my next live show with Overpass in November, well, yes, not wishing the summer away.
